Swansea, Massachusetts, is a lovely suburban/rural community with a long, rich history. Though founded on the idea of religious tolerance, it ended up being the starting place of King Philip’s War. Prior to the war in 1675, the area was home to multiple historic Native American settlements and trails. It was in 1663 that Colonial settlement began and the town received its name, named after the village in Wales from which its minister originated.
After the war, a substantial part of the economy was made up of fishing, ironworks, and forges. The community was comprised of small villages which encompassed grist and yarn mills, cotton mills, fishing boats, and stores; however the larger cities of Providence, Taunton, and Fall River eventually absorbed the town’s industries. The sizeable agricultural capacity of Swansea remained significant, however. With the arrival of the street trolley in the 1890s, Swansea found itself connected to Providence and Fall River, and soon summer and suburban homes were appearing. Today, Swansea remains as a lovely suburban area with a remarkable amount of open agricultural land and beautiful Colonial homes.
Situated in southeastern Massachusetts, Swansea is bordered by Seekonk, Rehoboth, and Dighton on the north; the mouth of the Taunton River on the south; Somerset on the east; and Barrington and Warren, Rhode Island, on the southwest and west. This charming community is only forty-seven miles south of Boston, twelve miles southeast of Providence, and four miles west of Fall River. Its fabulous location affords residents easy access to exciting amenities and attractions far beyond its borders. That said, within Swansea, there are playgrounds, a town beach, multiple bike paths, and fitness facilities which residents can easily enjoy. With such a long, rich history, a convenient location, and these amenities, Swansea is an excellent choice for prospective homebuyers.
